Always in motion…
Zarah EOY 2011: Driving, Sewing, Art and More
Spring 2011 at the end of my sophomore year I took the classroom part of driver’s ed. Driving practice was during the summer. One of the days that we were sitting in the hot summer heat, we got a strange thunderstorm. Tornado warnings were everywhere, and the sky turned sort of green. I had never seen a tornado before and was very excited to see what the storm would look like. That evening we dyed my girlfriend’s hair and enjoyed the thunderstorms. The tornado never showed up in Dudley, but it caused some disaster nearby. It was a fairly exciting new experience from Massachusetts. The summer was hot and rainy, but I finished all my driving hours before school started in the fall. I’m still driving on my learner’s permit now and practicing to take the test for my license.
Selena moved in with us at the beginning of summer after her graduation. I quit color guard at the end of my sophomore year, deciding I would rather spend my time at home with my girlfriend, focusing on art and sewing, and to give myself more time for school work during my Junior year. Over the summer I went to a volunteer job at the Community Cat Connection in Webster taking care of homeless kitties. I thought about getting a job, even applied at a dog day care, but nothing worked out, so I stayed home and enjoyed my summer time, going to sewing classes every so often.
My sewing project for the summer was a long jacket for our family friend, Jason, which I finished a week or two before Halloween. My next project for sewing was a corset for Selena which I am still working on. It is coming out so well! Many of my friends are asking me to make them clothes too, so I have my work cut out for me in 2012. I got another push toward my fashion designing future in the shape of a 1965 Singer sewing machine that sews like butter… it was a birthday present from my uncle Kevin, and I couldn’t be more happy with it. It seems my future is very bright.
We were looking at schools I might want to go to for my Fashion Designer education, and for the moment my favorites are School for Fashion Design in Boston. Boston University where my mom’s new job is has also opened up as an option for me. We have yet to go visit the schools yet. However we did go to a Portfolio viewing and showed off my art portfolio to several schools. I got a lot of good feedback.
Over the summer we also went to a two tribe events. First we went to Spiritfire and I introduced Selena to our tribe family! She fit it quite well. We also went to Wildfire in September which is an event full of workshops on hooping and fire spinning. Wildfire was all I hoped for and more. I got another beautiful collapsible hula hoop to help me learn isolations. We are hoping to go to another wildfire this year, the sense of excitement and fun was so good. I hula-hooped in fire twice! First time, in the bitter cold night, it was so exhilarating.
Junior year is going alright, my grades are A’s and B’s. I have new friends who I adore, but I haven’t found as much time to hang out with them as I’d like to except when I was on the stage crew for the school play of Macbeth. The play went well, I’m thinking about doing the musical in the Spring as well. I am a little frustrated still being in school when I want to get a move on with my future, but I am pleased to be an upperclassman now, although I would prefer to be a Senior.
The end of the calendar year has been pretty good too. We got a new kitten, Zinc, and I love him, even though he is a trouble maker. My birthday was wonderful, with my friends who came to a birthday party and some wonderful birthday presents from my family, like good quality art supplies. I have decided I really like oil pastels, and I love using markers. The most amazing present of all was from Selena though. She found a way to let me pet a fox for the first time! He was wonderful and sweet, and so soft. He especially liked his chin being scratched. I really want to have a pet fox. My Christmas was pretty pleasant too, although we were on a money budget. I made sculpy jewelry with gear imprint in them for my friends, and I got some fun things from them too. All in all 2011 was a good year, and I am looking forward to 2012.
I take sewing lessons from Eddi at The Fabric Stash. He is a graduate of The School for Fashion Design where I am thinking of going.

I’m curious whether the fox you met was simply a friendly-ish wild one, or one of the Siberian silvers? ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domesticated_silver_fox ) Wild foxes don’t like being in captivity, and even after a long period of seeming tame they still are skittish about being around people, and may bite, engage in inappropriate spraying / marking behaviors, etc. The actual domesticated foxes are pretty darn cute, but from what I understand, not cheap. (Also, I probably won’t ever get one for the same reason I probably won’t ever actually go to a breeder for a Bengal, Savannah, Siamese, or any of the other purebreds I find particularly lovely — there is an effectively infinite number of lost / stray / feral critters that desperately need homes, and cost nothing to acquire; I’d feel kinda guilty if I instead went and spent money on one who had a pampered life to begin with.)
I’m about to head off honeymooning in Spain. When I get back I need to figure out how to attach the RSS feed from this site to LiveJournal, which is still my primary blogging site. (I think I even have your old LJ account on my friendslist, and I know I have your mother’s.)
We’re going to try to get out to the east coast around next Solstice / New Year’s season. Maybe we’ll see you then.
Sox, the fox I petted, was actually a wild fox to begin with, but he was a rescue when he was little, and has lived with humans his whole life. He could fool you into thinking he was a domesticated fox though, he is friendly enough, and he LOVES pets. He’s not skittish at all. The other rescue fox is skittish, but she hasn’t been living with humans her whole life like Sox has. Sox does mark all the time, and is nippy when he is playful, but you would get that with any fox, domesticated or not. All foxes feel the need to mark, even when they are just happy to see you.
Sibera is not the only place you can buy domesticated foxes. Their are a few breeders here in the united states whose prices start at $300 (Selena and I have done research, we plan on having foxes some day). Selena also wishes for big cats (tigers most of all) but I am betting we would only be foster parents, because they are a lot to handle, and very wild. She is going to college for captive wildlife care and education, so if anyone can handle the animals, it would be her.
Have fun on your Honeymoon! I hear Spain is lovely. I don’t go on to livejournal anymore, I barely have time or energy for a status on facebook now and then. It would be nice to see you.
